Beatrice Ekweremadu denies being part of search for kidney donor for ailing daughter

Beatrice Ekweremadu, the wife of embattled former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has denied that she was involved in the quest for an organ donor for their sick daughter, Sonia.

She denied the accusation on Monday at the Old Bailey in London, where she is on trial with her husband, daughter, and a doctor named Obinna Obeta.

Xtra.net reports Beatrice and her husband were arrested in the UK last year on charges that they sold a young man so that they could take his kidney.

It is said that the young man lied about being Sonia’s cousin to try to get doctors at the Royal Free Hospital to do a private $80,000 procedure for him.

Beatrice told the court that her husband took care of the family’s finances and that she only did housework, like going to see their children at school every couple of weeks in the UK.

Her husband said Sonia got sick in 2019 and was diagnosed with a kidney problem in the UK. This is how they found out that their daughter had a problem.

The jury was told that when Sonia went back to London, she saw a doctor at the Cromwell Hospital and then at the Royal Free.

The defence attorney, Anu Mohindru KC, told the BBC, “There are text messages from your husband keeping you informed of what was happening. Is that something he would do?”

The accused answered, “Yes. He tells me what he thinks I need to know.”

The lawyer then asked Ekweremadu if he had told his medically trained brother Diwe about what they had talked about.

Beatrice stated to the jury that she considered Diwe Ekweremadu to be the family doctor; however, she did not enquire further about this.

Obeta, who used to go to school with Diwe, is said to have offered to help the family.

Mohindru asked the defendant, Mrs Ekweremadu if she had helped find any candidates. Mrs Ekweremadu said she had not.

The Ekweremadus, who live in Willesden Green, North-West London, and Obeta, who live in Southwark, South London, both deny the charges against them, and the trial continues.
