The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said that a story in a Nigerian newspaper on March 13, 2023, that said the Governor, Godwin Emefiele, had started a “fresh plot against the President-elect,” is not true.
In a statement signed by the Acting Director of Corporate Communications for the CBN, Isa Abdulmumin, it was said that the story also noted that the Governor had given a certain amount of money to a political candidate before the March 18, 2023, gubernatorial election.
“We wish to inform members of the public that this story is completely false and malicious as the Governor does not know and has never met or even spoken with Mr Gbadebo Rhodes Vivour in person or through proxy.
“We wish to reiterate that the CBN Governor does not take part in Politics and therefore urge anyone with contrary information to prove the Governor wrong should provide such facts,” the statement stated.
As a result, the CBN said that its Governor and his team at the top banking sector regulator should be allowed to focus on their jobs so that the Bank can fulfil its legal responsibilities.
Since the Supreme Court’s decision on the Naira redesign policy, the CBN Governor has been quiet. Many Nigerians are counting their losses every day because of the cash shortage that has hit the country.
