Ibrahim Shekarau to ‘dump’ PDP for APC

Under the New Nigerian Peoples Party, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau has been named the winner of the 2023 election for the Kano Central Senatorial District.

Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, the former governor of Kano State, is widely expected to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the coming days.

Sen. Shekarau and the current governor of the state, Abdullahi Ganduje, are said to have met. This has led to rumours.

After yesterday’s funeral prayers for one of Kano’s most famous sons, Governor Ganduje was seen driving Shekarau to his home in Mundubawa Country in the full regalia of the Governor’s Convoy, according to Xtra.net.

This all transpired after Senator Shekarau spotted Ganduje at the funeral of a well-known Kano business mogul, SD Yakasai. Ganduje afterwards offered to transport him to his home in Mundubawa.

Multiple people who know about the emerging trend confirmed that Shekarau’s decision to leave the PDP and join the APC is to help his former ally, Dr Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, reach his goal of becoming governor of the state.

When Gawuna was Chairman of the Nasarawa local government area, he was known to be one of Shekarau’s most loyal followers.

Sources who did not want to be named said that Shekarau supporters have been told to vote for Mr Gawuna of the APC instead of Sadiq Wali, who is running for the PDP.

Ganduje’s visit to Shekarau’s home on Friday confirmed that Shekarau would return to the APC.

Insiders said that Shekarau was angry because, during the last Presidential election, Atiku Abubakar went around Shekarau and gave campaign money to Mr Ibrahim Little instead of giving it to Shekarau.

Shekarau left the APC on his own after his group, the G7, lost control of the party to Ganduje. He joined Kwankwaso temporarily in the NNPP before settling with the PDP in a big ceremony that Atiku Abubakar and other well-known opposition party leaders attended.

In response to the new development, Shekarau said that his supposed return to APC was just a rumour.

Shekarau spoke through his Special Adviser on Media, Dr Sule Yau Sule. He said, “to clear certain misconception, today after the Janaza of SDY, Governor Ganduje offered a ride to His Excellency Senator Ibrahim Shekarau to Makabira, from where they visited the family of the deceased after which he took Sardauna back to his house.”
