Issey Miyake’s Biography

This famous, well-known designer was born in Hiroshima, Japan, where he experienced the atomic bombing in August 1945.

As every average child with desires, he desired to be a dancer. His keen interest in design began from studying his sister’s design magazine.

He wasn’t going to settle for less, so he furthered his studies by studying graphics design at Tama Art University, Tokyo; in 1964, he graduated. He went to competitions at the Bunka Fashion College and did not win due to his raw skills at first.

That did not stop him either, he kept chasing his dream, and in 2012, he became one of the co-directors of the 21 21 design sight, Japan’s first design museum.

He celebrated his 45 years of career when his most enormous retrospective work was organized at the National Center, Tokyo, in march 2010.

In March 1992, he was quoted in the International Herald Tribune as saying “design is not for philosophy-its for life.”

He died of liver cancer on 5 August 2022, his age a total of 84 years.

Issey Miyake’s Career

In the late 1980s, Miyake experimented with new pleating methods that would allow both flexibility of movement for the wearer and ease production care.

He designed his first two-piece for a Ballet in Frankfurt, named the piece “the loss of small details” and William Forsythe a Ballet work too, and named the piece “garden in the setting.” After the dance event, he realized that the dancers looked good and went ahead to do more.

Between 1996 and 1999, he collaborated with several great artists for his guest art series; his first collaboration was with the photographer and then the collage maker.

Miyake stated that his intention was not to answer the question “is fashion art? ” but to create an interactive relationship between the art and the people who admired it by wearing it in their bodies and feeling the beauty in each design.
