The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State has voiced concern about the alleged illegal arrest of its leaders across the state in the days leading up to Saturday’s election for the House of Assembly.
Dr Akindele Adekunle, the Caretaker Chairman, spoke to reporters at the PDP secretariat in Osogbo over the weekend. He said the Commissioner of Police for Election, Oladipo Abayomi, should be moved because he is allegedly biassed.
He said the police didn’t do anything about the complaints about the attack on PDP members sent to his office.
Adekunle said, “The police commissioner for election has not been professional in the discharge of his duties. Petitions from PDP on attacks on our members were not attended to. We have concluded that Abayomi is biased and partisan. We call for his redeployment with immediate effect.
“PDP leaders are being hunted and arrested across Osun State; the homes of our leaders are being surrounded and raided even without search warrants. These are plots to disrupt the peace of Osun State ahead of the rescheduled House of Assembly election slated for Saturday.”
Nevertheless, the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a statement published by the party’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, condemned the claim as “sweeping, unfounded, and unsubstantiated.” The statement was delivered on behalf of the party’s Acting Chairman, Tajudeen Lawal.
During the last general election on February 25, the party said that PDP thugs caused trouble for the people of the state, especially APC members.
APC also said that about ten members were killed, and many more were hurt by people they thought were PDP thugs.
