Felisberto Sampaio, a pastor, and his wife, Inalda, tried to save their 13-year-old son from drowning at Camacari Beach in Paraba, Brazil, last Tuesday. They both died as heroes.
After seeing their son, Ian Sampaio, drowning, his parents reportedly dove into the water to save him, only to perish themselves.
While on vacation, Felisberto, 43, and Inalda, 42, saw their son Ian sliding into the ocean at the beach.
The couple dove into the water to save the boy, but they were too far out.
The Brazilian news agency UOL reports that a fisherman and another family member rescued Ian. Good Samaritans pulled the parents from the water and put them in the boat.
While Inalda lay motionless on the sand, a video showed a firefighter feverishly trying to save Felisberto’s life by doing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
On the spot, paramedics pronounced both Felisberto and Inalda dead.
Isaac, the eldest child, told TV Borborema that he had intended to visit his parents on January 9, exactly one day after he had last seen them on January 8.
“The thing that goes through people’s minds is that it’s a lie,” he stated.
Felisberto served as pastor at the Assembly of God Church in Quixaba, Paraba, for 12 years.
The family was from Campina Grande, but they were visiting the city of Lucena in the state of Parabá for a few days.
Leonardo Meneses, the pastor at a church that Felisberto and Inalda regularly attended, was among those saddened by the couple’s untimely passing.
“I know that the circumstances are painful and difficult for us to understand; only eternity will explain all the mysteries of life”, Meneses remarked.
