The athletic ability of Raymond Ekevwo had been obvious since he was a toddler and throughout his teenage years.

Ughelli, while still a student at High Standard Comprehensive School in 2015, submitted an application to participate in the Making of Champions Reality TV athletics competition, Top Sprinter. While he was only a junior, he competed in the senior 100 meters event of the match in 2016 and won the title and award. Everyone on the panel of judges was vying for him to join their squad.

At the 2016 D.K. Olukoya Youth and Junior Championships, he won the junior division of the 100-meter race and took home the title of Nigerian junior champion. He took first place with a new personal best time of 10.35 seconds.

As the reigning junior national champion, he was given the opportunity to compete for his country in the IAAF World U20 Championships in 2016. Because the Nigerian team came so late, he was unable to compete in the race.
