Senator Walid Jibrin, a former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party’s board of trustees, has claimed that the All Progressives Congress intends to divide Nigerians with its Muslim/Muslim Ticket in the upcoming 2023 elections.
The allegation was made by Jibrin, chairman of the PDP presidential and governorship campaign council in Nasarawa State, at a Thursday night rally in the Awe Local Government Area.
Recall that APC presidential candidate Bola Tinubu, a Muslim, had also chosen Kashim Shettima, a Muslim, as his running mate before the election.
The development sparked religiously motivated protests, particularly among Christian conservatives who saw it as an attempt to “Islamise” the country.
Some influential Christians left the APC due to the party’s actions.
The former senator went on to say that such an act of unpatriotism was never to be welcomed, especially in light of the increasing threats to national security.
“The apparent late excuses by Tinubu to justify an anomaly, that his wife is a Pentecostal pastor are lame and insulting to the sensibility of Nigerians.
“And with what the APC and its presidential candidate have done, it is obvious that Nigeria cannot be safe in the hands of the former governor of Lagos State whose decisions and actions could plunge the country into chaos.”
According to Jibrin, however, PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and PDP candidate for governor of Nasarawa state David Ombugadu are both persons of great intellect and poise who will lead to the nation’s steady progress and prosperity if elected.
He urged everyone in the state to vote for PDP in the 2023 elections, saying that the party would deliver on its promise to address the country’s many problems and spread the benefits of democracy more widely.
The ongoing conflict between the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and the Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, has led the former chairman of the Board of Trustees to comment that party leaders are working feverishly to resolve the issue before the 2023 elections begin.
What’s going on in the PDP right now is a private family affair. Alhaji Atiku and Governor Wike are brothers. As leaders, we are trying to address the issues, and we are hopeful they will be resolved before the February 2023 elections.
“I stepped down from my position as BoT chairman to allow peace to reign in the party and pave the way for other party stakeholders who had never occupied my former position to do so.
“I am confident that the PDP will retake the presidency and win many states during the forthcoming elections, so I am urging our party members and supporters to remain resolute in the struggle,” Walid Jibrin added.
