Bassey Albert, a politician in Nigeria, has been a senator there since June 2015. He served as Akwa Ibom State’s Commissioner of Finance from 2007 until 2014. Bassey Albert Akpan was born on October 28, 1972, and that is his full name. He was initially elected to the Senate in March 2015 to represent the Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District. He was re-elected for a second term in February 2019 to continue serving in that capacity. Following a ruling by Justice Agatha Okeke of the Federal High Court in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, he was transferred to the prison in Ikot Ekpene. The court convicted him on six counts of money laundering brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Bassey Albert Akpan was born on October 28, 1972, in the village of Ididep Usuk, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, to the family of Chief Albert Robert Akpan, a wealthy businessman, influential politician, and generous benefactor.

Bassey Albert launched his professional career in 1997 when he became a member of the International Operations and Consumer Banking/Retail Banking Unit at the United Bank for Africa (UBA). His promotion to Manager of the Corporate Banking Group at Continental Trust Bank’s Lagos, Nigeria headquarters on Victoria Island came in 1999.  He then worked for First Inland Bank Plc as the Uyo Branch Manager, where he was recognized as the bank’s top performer in the South-South area. This was in 2003. In the bank’s 2004 fiscal year mid-year review, he was recognized as the most successful branch manager.

After working as General Manager for First City Monument Bank in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States since 2005, Bassey Albert was promoted to Assistant Vice President in 2010. Bassey Albert managed the day-to-day activities of more than 15 locations spread throughout the zone. In his role as Zonal Head, Bassey Albert articulated and developed the bank’s essential global branding, which has been instrumental in the institution’s sustained expansion and profitability. He accepted his nomination to the Executive Council of the Akwa Ibom state government in 2007, where he was tasked with overseeing the finance ministry. Thanks to his knowledge of banking and economics, he brought in an extra N15.6 billion in IGR for the State in the last three months of 2013.

Bassey Albert also presided over the Inter-ministerial Direct Labour Coordinating Committee, whose job was to ensure that direct labour was used to complete government projects. He completed over 6,000 projects that improved the lives of people in the areas of health, education, rural advancement, and human capital.

Bassey Albert took his oath as a Federal Republic of Nigeria senator on June 9, 2015. Even though he was a first-term senator, Bassey Albert made a name for himself in the Senate by sponsoring several bills, motions, petitions, and other matters of critical importance. He proposed looking into the dilapidated and long-abandoned highway connecting Ikot Ekpene, Itu, and Calabar on the Senate floor. The Senate consequently appointed him to serve on a new committee. The Appeal Court upheld his election on October 12, 2015, making him the senator for Akwa Ibom North East senatorial district.

In May 2016, Bassey Albert provided undergraduate students in Akwa Ibom State with scholarships. The Scholarship fully supports the beneficiary’s education and living costs throughout the program. While 267 students were still enrolled in Nigeria’s higher education institutions as the 2019/2020 academic year began, 114 had already graduated and received their degrees. Uyo Senatorial District voters were so impressed with his work during the first term that they sent him back to Abuja to serve as a Senator for the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the upcoming 2019 elections.

Bassey Albert, a former Finance Commissioner of Akwa Ibom and Chairman of the State Inter-Ministerial Direct Labour Coordinating Committee, was arrested in May 2017 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for accepting cars as a bribe from Jide Omokore. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) allegedly claimed that the cars were used to bribe Bassey Albert after Jide Omokore’s companies, Bay Atlantic Energy and Sahel Energy, won contracts from the Direct Labour Coordinating Committee. He filed a lawsuit against the EFCC for violating his human rights, claiming that his detention and investigation were motivated by politics.

In the High Court of Lagos State, the EFCC filed corruption and bribery charges against Bassey Albert and Jide Omokore in August 2018. In June 2018, Bassey Albert was charged with failing to declare his existing assets following an investigation by the Special Presidential Investigation Panel on the Recovery of Public Property (SPIP). The SPIP investigated allegations that Albert had concealed his ownership of multiple properties and the actual value of their purchase. Bassey Albert said that criticizing the government was a futile smear campaign.

Bassey Albert is now one of the leading candidates for governor of Akwa Ibom State. He is running for office as a Young Progressives Party (YPP) member. As far as the people of the Niger Delta state are concerned, he has the backing he needs to become governor.
