Mikuru Asakura began his training in karate when he was in elementary school. During this time, he also participated in volleyball for three years. As kids, both Mikuru and his brother Kai Asakura routinely got into fights on the street and sometimes even fought each other. A therapist recommended that their mother sign them up for boxing classes when they became older. When the Asakura brothers were freshmen at Toyohashi Technical High School in the Aichi Prefecture, they were introduced to mixed martial arts at the Zen Dokai Toyohashi Dojo.

Mikuru and his sibling Kai Asakura made their MMA debuts as amateurs for the Fighting Network Rings Outsider promotion. The Outsider brand was aimed at disturbed young people, with the primary focus on using mixed martial arts (MMA) to rehabilitate delinquents, criminals, and members of gangs. He would later fight someone from outside his group in a professional match. After defeating Kohei Shimada with a rear-naked choke in the first round of their first amateur bout, he went on to win six of his next seven bouts and lose only to Takehiro Higuchi.

In 2012, as part of the DEEP promotion, Mikuru Asakura had his first professional bout against another first-timer, Morikazu Itagaki. In the Outsider promotion, a spin-off of the Fighting Network Rings promotion, Mikuru Asakura returned to fighting after a three-year layoff. Just two fights into his professional career, he won the Outsider 154 lbs Championship with a first-round technical knockout of Keinosuke Yoshinaga at The Outsider 26. Asakura finished the battle in 53 seconds.

Nine months later, at The Outsider 42, Mikuru Asakura would defend his 143-pound title against Hiroyuki Furuta before appearing in ROAD FC, where he would lose a first-round TKO to Doo Seok Oh in front of the Road Fighting Championship banner at Road FC 37. For the first time in his career, Mikuru Asakura was defeated by the no-name Kil Woo Lee in a close vote at Road FC 43.
