Seyi Makinde did his national service (NYSC) with Nigeria’s Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC). He later worked there as a trainee engineer. From 1990 to 1992, he took on several different responsibilities and worked on several large-scale initiatives. He started with Rebold International Limited as a field Engineer in 1992 and stayed there until 1997 when he was elevated to Field Manager of the company’s Eket Operations.

Five years later, in 1997, he started his firm, Makon Engineering and Technical Services Limited (METS), after serving as Engineering Manager for various IOCs in the international oil and gas industry from 1992 to 1997. He’s the Makon Group’s group managing director.

Among the many groups that Seyi Makinde belongs to are the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Council for Regulations of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Oil and Gas Design Engineers of Nigeria (OGDEN), the International Society of Automation (ISA), the Institute of Measurement and Control (UK), and the American Measurement Institute (AMI).

Along with his commercial success, Seyi Makinde ran for the Senate seat representing Oyo South in 2007 on the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) platform. Still, he lost to Kamoru Adedibu of the Peoples Democratic Party. In 2010, he ran as a People’s Democratic Party candidate for the Senate seat representing Nigeria’s Oyo South, but he was defeated in the party’s primary. The fact that he had failed the first time didn’t deter him.

While running on the People’s Democratic Party ticket, Seyi Makinde sought the office of governor in Oyo State in 2015. After the party primary election concluded in December 2014, he was not given the nomination for governor.

Despite this, Seyi Makinde never gave up on his aspiration and, in 2015, campaigned for governor of Oyo State as the Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) candidate, receiving over 50,000 votes and coming in third place.

In September 2017, Seyi Makinde returned to his former political party, the People’s Democratic Party, after extensive, deep, and thorough discussions with National Leaders, Oyo State leaders and elders of the Social Democratic Party, and cross sections of strategic partners within Oyo State.

He claimed that he had joined the PDP, not for himself but to help the state progress by finding permanent solutions to its many problems. After a lengthy campaign, on September 29, 2018, Seyi Makinde received 2772 votes to become the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)’s candidate for governor of Oyo State in the 2019 general elections.

On March 9, 2019, Seyi Makinde won the election with 515,621 votes, beating his closest rival, Adebayo Adelabu of the All Progressives Congress, who received 357,982 votes. The All Progressives Congress (APC) won the general elections, and on March 9, 2019, he was elected governor of Oyo State.

On May 29, 2019, Seyi Makinde became the 28th executive Governor of Oyo state, succeeding the late Senator Abiola Ajimobi.

To further demonstrate his commitment to serving the people of Oyo State, on April 7, 2022, he announced his intention to run for reelection for an additional four years.
