She won the regional championship in both 2011 and 2012, came in third place in the state championship, and finished fifth at the national championships in 2012.

At the UVA Quad Meet in Charlottesville, Virginia, Onyekwere threw 52.4 meters (171 feet and eleven inches), shattering the previous record that had held for 34 years. She then threw 54.43 meters (178 feet and seven inches) to win bronze at the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
