He triumphed over Raj Aravinda Algar of India by a score of 3-0.

In contrast to other athletes who start playing tennis at a young age, Ogunkule did not develop a passion for the sport until 2010, making it a little over a decade ago. When Ogunkunle was 16 years old, he was forced to use a wheelchair because he suffered from an illness that affected his limbs.

“I was just 16 when I fell sick, and this sickness made my limbs lifeless, resulting from me using a wheelchair,” Ogunkunle recalled wistfully. “for four years after this sickness, I indoors thought the injury had ruined my life.

“But to be relevant in life, I became a shoe cobbler which I was doing until 2010 when I was introduced to table Tennis; and in one year after starting the game, I became Nigeria’s National Champion in Class 4.”

It was pure luck that he was able to make it onto the national team, and he made his debut on the international stage at the 2011 African Championships in Egypt, where he finished in third place and had to settle for a bronze medal. In 2019, he was given a stroke of good fortune when he was chosen to compete in the African Championships in Egypt. Ogunkunle’s achievement improved his world ranking, which earned him a spot in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics despite the fact that he was defeated in the final by his admired friend Sameh Eid.

His time in Japan came to an end after the second round, but the experience will live on in his memories for a long time. He also acknowledges the fact that playing table tennis has had a significant positive impact on his overall health.

According to Ogunkunle, who participated in the GAPS Programme leading up to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the experience was quite beneficial.

“My expectation for the 2022 Commonwealth Games is to win gold, and I will be fully prepared to win the gold for Nigeria,” he said.
