During the 2016-2017 season, Cody Gakpo made his debut on the reserve team of Jong PSV, although he spent most of his time playing for the under-19 squad. Cody Gakpo debuted for Jong PSV on November 4, 2016, against Helmond Sport, in the Eerste Divisie. Later in the season, he played only one more game for Jong PSV. Following his breakout performance in the U19 Eredivisie the following year (seven goals and five assists in 13 league matches), he was promoted to the reserves at the turn of the year.

Cody Gakpo scored in his second Eerste Divisie game on January 19, 2017, a 3-2 road victory against De Graafschap.
