The premiere of “Bel-Air” is comparable to the ascent of a bird to the loftiest heavens. The fact that it stars Will Smith made me excited to see.

Aside from that, Bel-Air is the kind of movie that you might want to skip seeing all together. I will explain why:

About Bel-Air

Bel-Air is an American drama TV show created by Morgan Cooper, TJ Brady, Rasheed Newson, and Malcolm Spellman. The film is an updated adaptation of the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which in turn was adapted from Bradley Cooper’s family-friendly short film of the same name.

The cast of the film includes Jimmy Akingbola, Simone Joy Jones, Coco Jones, Olly Sholotan, Akira Akbar, Cassandra Freeman, Adrian Holmes, Jordan L. Jones, and Jabari Banks. The pilot episode of the series was broadcast on Peacock for the very first time on February 13, 2022.

Rotten Tomatoes has an average rating of 6.2/10 from 66% of 47 critics. “Bel-Air replaces its predecessor’s bright spirits with a dour tone and an unsettling combination of realism, yet there are clues that this reworking can evolve into a creative new take,” the website says.

A weighted average of 25 critics gave Metacritic a score of 59 out of 100, indicating “mixed or mediocre reviews”. Bel-Air became Peacock’s most-streamed original series on May 2, 2022, with 8 million accounts.

Bel-Air Premise

After Will Smith’s arduous ascent from the mean streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air, the events depicted in the television series take place.

Bel-Air Production

Morgan Cooper released his fan film Bel-Air on YouTube on March 10, 2019. It’s a parody trailer for a futuristic, dramatic remake of the 1990s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

The sitcom, which has been in development for almost a year, was finally unveiled on August 11, 2020. At the time, the show’s rights were sought after by HBO, Max, Peacock, and streaming giant Netflix. Will Smith, who played a fictionalized version of himself in the original series, has complimented the fan film, indicated interest in turning the premise into a revival, and even met Cooper in person.

The series premiered online on Crown & Conquer on February 9, 2022. On February 13, 2022, Peacock aired the first three episodes of the series. Will Smith surprised Jabari Banks in August 2021 by telling him he was a part of the lead. Karruehe Tran, SteVonte Hart, Scottie Thompson, April Parker Jones, Joe Holt, and Charlie Hall all had recurring parts in episodes airing in January 2022.

Bel-Air Summary

Will Smith, a student at West Philadelphia High School, has an excellent shot at receiving a basketball scholarship to play at the collegiate level. He and Ray are insulted by Darnell after a basketball game, leading them to place a wager with local drug boss Rashad. Will Smith and his buddy came out on top, but Darnell started something. In an effort to clear the court, Will fires a shot into the air, which ultimately leads to his capture. His mother and Philip, her brother-in-law, broke him out of jail and brought him to live with Philip in Bel-Air.

In order to support Phil’s run for District Attorney, Will Smith hitches a ride with Jazz and attends a campaign fundraiser. Philip is concerned that he would hurt his campaign despite having a positive relationship with his aunt Vivian and cousin Hilary. During Will Smith’s first day of school at Bel-Air Academy, Carlton publicly embarrassed him in front of the entire Junior Class. The second scene opens with Will Smith receiving a phone call from his mom informing him that his friend Tray has been shot. Meanwhile, Big Boy interviews his uncle Uncle Phil for his radio show, probing him more deeply about his private life.

In the following scenario, we see Uncle Phil convincing his nephews Carlton, Will, Hilary, and Ashley to register fifty new voters. In exchange for Carlton’s promise not to cause a disturbance with Will Smith, he offers Carlton VIP tickets to the Monaco Grand Prix. Later on, Tray’s devotion is tested when, under the influence of alcohol, he reveals Will Smith’s secret to Carlton at the dinner table. After learning this, Carlton goes to make a new arrangement with Uncle Phil, who threatens to report him if he doesn’t play by his rules. After the Will Smith-Aunt Vivan deal, Tray visited Bel-Air.

If you ask me again, I’ll tell you to put this amazing film on your list of things to see; if you’ve already seen it and still don’t think it was a smart decision, then consider this your official pass to skip it. Just watch it; it’s a great film.

Don’t forget to gather some pals and some popcorn.

Enjoy!
