Douye Diri is the governor of the Nigerian state of Bayelsa. During the 9th session of the Nigerian National Assembly, he was elected to serve as the senator for Bayelsa Central senatorial district, which is located in Bayelsa state. The date of Douye Diri’s birth is June 4, 1959.

Douye Diri attended Okoro Primary School in Sampou for the first half of his elementary school career before transferring to Rev. Proctor Memorial Primary School in Kaiama to earn his First School Leaving Certificate in 1977. After that, he continued his education at the Government Secondary School in Odi, located in Bayelsa. A National Certificate in Education (NCE) was awarded to Douye Diri in 1985 after completing his studies at the College of Education in Port-Harcourt, located in the state of Rivers. Additionally, he went to the University of Port-Harcourt and received a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) in Political Science from that institution in 1990.
Douye Diri Career
Douye Diri worked as a teacher in the public school system of the Old Rivers State for several years before entering politics. He is the First National Organizing Secretary of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), the most important organization of the Ijaw Nation. During the administration of Bayelsa’s first executive governor, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, Douye Diri served as Executive Secretary of the state’s Centre for Youth Development from 2000 to 2002. During the Goodluck Jonathan government in Bayelsa State, 2005–2006, he was named Commissioner for Youth and Sports.
From 2000 to 2012, Douye Diri represented the University of Maiduguri on its governing council board. In 2012, he headed the Disciplinary Council for the People’s Democratic Party in Bayelsa State. Until he declared to run for the Federal House of Representatives in 2014 to represent the kolokuma, Opokuma, and Yenagoa Federal Constituency, Douye Diri served as Deputy Chief of Staff Government House, beginning in August 2012. He then served as Principal Executive Secretary for a year. In 2015, Douye Diri was voted into office.
In February 2019, Douye Diri was elected to represent the Bayelsa Central Senatorial District in the Senate. He served in that capacity from June 12, 2019, to February 11, 2022, when he was declared the governor-elect of Bayelsa. The Supreme Court of Nigeria annulled David Lyon’s victory in the 2019 Bayelsa State gubernatorial election on February 13, 2020. The court noted that David Lyon’s running mate had submitted questionable credentials to the Independent National Electoral Commission that used fictitious identities. The court mandated that the INEC recognize the runner-up, Douye Diri, as the governor-elect. INEC eventually presented a Certificate of Return to Douye Dir, and he was inaugurated as governor of Bayelsa State on February 14, 2020.
On August 17, 2020, he was removed from his position as governor of the state by an election petition tribunal. However, a court of appeals in Abuja, Nigeria, overturned the tribunal’s decision and recognized him as Governor on October 2, 2020. Security guards at Murtala Muhammed International Airport revealed that Douye Diri and his advisers forced their way through the checkpoints to board the invitation-only United Nigeria Airlines trip from Lagos to Yenagoa in August 2021.
