Nigeria men’s table tennis team was flawless in their group after winning their third group match against Cyprus with Quadri Aruna and Olajide Omotayo marshaling the victory for the team to berth in the quarterfinal of the event at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games.
In the women’s event, however, Nigeria’s hope of playing in the quarterfinal has been halted as their comeback was thwarted by England with a 3-2 win in the final group match of the female team event.
It was the determined English side that expressed their intention to progress with a convincing win in the opener of the double as the duo of Fatimo Bello and Edem Offiong lost 3-0 (6-11, 8-11, 12-14) to Charlotte Bardsley and Maria Tsaptsinos.
In the first singles match, the spirited effort from Ajoke Ojomu was halted by Tin-Tin Ho who defeated the Nigerian 3-0 (11-4, 11-9, 11-7).
Offiong restored Nigeria into the match after a pulsating 3-1 (4-11, 11-9, 13-11, 12-10) over Tsaptsinos.
Nigeria’s best player Bello was pitched against the English’s best Ho and the encounter lived up to expectation with both players thrilling the spectators with their shots and strokes.
The deciding game put the fans at the edge of their seat, but it was Bello who silenced the fans with 11-4 win to put the overall tie at 2-2.
The final match between Ojomu and Bardsley saw the Nigerian player dominating the tie with an 11-6 win, but the English lady recovered with an 11-7 win in the second game. The third game was in favour of the home girl who won 11-8. Ojomu came back stronger in the fourth game to win at 11-3.
