Wojciech Szczesny: I lost €100 bet with Lionel Messi over penalty

Wojciech Szczesny, the Polish goalkeeper, said he had lost a €100 bet to Lionel Messi.

Wojciech Szczesny, the Polish goalkeeper, said he had lost a €100 bet to Lionel Messi.

In Wednesday night’s 2-0 loss to La Albiceleste, Szczesny made a penalty save from Messi.

The penalty save by Szczesny, who was judged to have hit Messi in the face with his arm while collecting an aerial cross, was essential for Poland in the goal-difference battle with Mexico. Still, the referee’s decision to give the spot-kick startled the Juventus goalkeeper.

It was only after Makkelie watched the event on VAR that he decided to award the penalty. Szczesny said he had bet Messi that the referee would rule against the penalty after seeing the replay.

“We spoke before the penalty, and I told would bet him €100 that he [referee] wasn’t going to give it,” Szczesny told TV2. “So I’ve lost a bet against Messi.

“I don’t know if that’s allowed at the World Cup — I’m probably going to get banned for it! But I don’t care right now.

“I’m not going to pay him either — he doesn’t care about €100. I think he has enough.”
